This simulator system teaches the student the basic concepts of
automotive air-conditioning. Students learn how to operate test
equipment through system components. Status lights indicate component
operation, while test points allow evaluation and troubleshooting.
This built-in test equipment provides convenient and safe operation
of the following system components:
Voltage probe
Refrigerant leak detector
Suction and discharge pressure gauges
Vacuum checks
Compressor/compressor clutch
Condenser
Radiator fan
Fixed tube orifice
Evaporator
Accumulator
LPCO cycling switch
PS pressure switch
WOT switch
HPCO switch
Passenger controls
Air distribution controls
The software enables the instructor to insert common faults or
malfunctions in electrical or mechanical components in a controlled
or random manner.
The major topics covered in the experiments and troubleshooting
exercises are:
Operation and function of: compressor, condenser, evaporator, and
fixed tube orifice
Detection and repair of blocked orifice tube, accumulator, and condenser
airflow
Understanding the pressure/temperature relationships of refrigerant
Detection and repair of bad engine fan motor, blower speed control
switch, blower motor brushes, and compressor valve
Understanding the effects of line restrictions on refrigerant pressure
and temperature
Diagnosis and repair of leaks in muffler Scrader valve, evaporator,
and accumulator input connection
Operation and function of pressure switches: LPOC, WOT, HPOC &
PS switches
Detection and repair of broken contact in WOT switch, closed and
intermittent stick in LPCO switch
Detection and repair of dirty contact in mode select switch and
clogged mode select vac switch
Detection and correction of opens in blower series resistor, and
relay contacts
Detection and repair of loose compressor belt and defective HPCO
diaphragm
Detection and repair of stuck defrost door vac motor
