Provides student study in the area of pollution, namely, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. The actual vehicle systems that control these emissions are accurately simulated to facilitate troubleshooting. A pictorial on the student panel shows the air and fuel management system and the controls used to minimize emission levels and optimize the air/fuel ratio.

Twenty-five malfunctions are divided into the following categories: engine faults, sensor faults, control faults, computer faults, and assembly faults. ITE's Emission Control training simulator provides a safe and reproducible environment for the experimentation and troubleshooting exercises listed below.

  • Operation and function of internal combustion engine
  • Detection of open fuel pressure vacuum solenoid and evaporator emission control solenoid
  • Understanding and measuring hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions
  • Detection and repair of closed EGR valve, open EGR vent solenoid, open ground EGR sensor, dirty EGR valve, and zero ECM of EGR vacuum solenoid
  • Operation and function of manifold air injection
  •  Detection and repair of bad, open or zero ECM signal in air switch solenoid, air switch and bypass valves
  • Operation and function of three-way catalytic converter
  • Detection and repair of open EFE heater, heater relay coil and switch
  • Understanding stoichiometric air/fuel ratio
  • Detection and repair of open coolant sensor, idle air out coil, and idle air ECM out
  • Experimentation in early fuel evaporation, idle air control, evaporative emission control and fuel control
  • Detection and repair of blocked vacuum delay, stuck preheat and PCV
  • Understanding air preheat systems, fuel control, exhaust-gas recirculation
  • Detection and repair of shorted injector solenoid and air temperature sensor
